Generations growing up in harmony with nature, on real food

At Serpil Orman Okulları, a meal is not just about filling the stomach. Children sit at the table together, know how the food is prepared and learn about its connection with nature.

Our schoolkitchen

  • Our own kitchen, our own cooksAll meals are prepared with a home-cooked taste by the school's cooks in the kitchen under the school's roof. No ready-made food or catering from outside is used.
  • Fresh daily mealsBreakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack are prepared. There is no canteen.
  • In season and naturalSeasonal products, as locally sourced as possible, are preferred. Yoghurt is made at school; strawberry and peach jam, canned tomatoes, borlotti beans and peas are prepared in summer.
  • From garden to tableChildren take part in sowing, tending and harvesting in the school vegetable garden; they eat fruit in the food forest and collect eggs from the coop. Leftover organic waste is returned to nature as compost.

We eat by getting to know nature

What we use plenty of: seasonal vegetables and fruit, red meat, butter, milk from the village's free-roaming cows, yoghurt cultured from that milk, homemade tomato paste.

What we use little of: sugar and flour.

What we never use: chicken meat, ready-made foods, industrial yoghurt, mayonnaise, ketchup, sweeteners, thickeners, industrial frozen foods and canned goods.
