Our Learning Philosophy and Living Curriculum

The world we will leave to our children is changing faster than ever before in history. That is why, every day at our school, we ask ourselves these key questions: “Are we able to build flexible, strong characters who can stand firm in a future full of unknowns? And will our children truly take good care of our world?”

For us, education is not simply about getting through today or being content with doing nature no harm. Our real aim is to raise young people with deep inner resilience who can adapt to the complexity of a changing world, and to inspire them to leave the world a far better place than they found it.

It is with exactly this vision that we shape our educational journey through our Living Curriculum:

Through experience. Through questions. Through projects. Together.

While we set aside the rote-learning rules of traditional education, we never give up its solid foundation and discipline. We preserve a solid foundation of knowledge, structure, and the disciplines of reading and mathematics; we bring this foundation together with the MEB curriculum in a nature-based approach, and build curiosity, discovery and collaboration on top of it.

Our children gain knowledge not by memorising it, but mostly by experimenting, questioning and creating projects. At Serpil Orman Okulları, a learning child is never a passive onlooker but is right at the heart of the work. We do not confine this transdisciplinary learning adventure within four walls; we hold our lessons in our open-air classrooms and in the very heart of the forest.

“At Serpil Orman Okulları, we ask ourselves this question every day: ‘What if simply protecting nature is not enough?’ We strive to help our children understand how valuable the knowledge they gain is, not only for their own success but also for the future of our planet. Our aim is to raise our children in the very heart of nature so that they form an unshakeable bond with it, and, building on the truth that ‘we protect what we love’, to nurture in them this instinct to protect. Then, we seek to turn this deep love into a powerful purpose, preparing children for the future as passionate individuals who heal the world.”

Life Literacy

Our Learning Backbone with a Strong Academic Foundation

At Serpil Orman Okulları, we believe that learning should be enjoyable, meaningful and directly connected to real life. That is why our educational approach is shaped not by a rigid programme with sharply drawn boundaries, but by our Life Literacy model.

Dynamic and holistic in structure, this model aims to raise our children not only to adapt to today’s world, but to understand the environment they live in, to take responsibility and to take action to make it better.

Our school’s educational programme is delivered in full alignment with the curricula and learning outcomes of the Turkish Ministry of National Education, and is enriched by our nature-based educational approach and the perspectives offered by the international education networks we belong to. In this way, our students build a solid foundation within the national academic system while also developing a global outlook that allows them to read the world from many different angles.

This holistic structure forms the foundation of the learning journey at our school. Every lesson, project and forest experience is designed to build connections between the academic, creative, physical, social-emotional and ecological areas of development.

Instead of sharp boundaries separating one subject from another, we create a meaningful, unified learning experience in which different disciplines nourish one another. As a result, our children do not simply memorise knowledge; they make connections between different fields, use what they learn in real life and understand it more deeply.

As we plan the learning process, follow our children’s development and evaluate our work, we are guided by Three Core Dimensions of Learning.

Experiential Learning Dimension

Learning by Doing and Living

For us, experiential learning means knowledge turning directly into action. Building a shelter in the forest is part of the bond we form with nature; observing pressure with a water rocket, examining real tissue in the laboratory or discovering the variety of stones is part of our scientific excitement. Born entirely from children’s curiosity, this hands-on approach empowers them to take ownership of their own learning journeys. At the same time, this dimension inspires our educators to design experiences that nurture children’s innovative thinking and carry learning beyond the walls of the classroom to meet the real world.

Academic Proficiency Dimension

A Solid Foundation of Knowledge

The path to leaving a meaningful and lasting mark on the world runs through a strong academic foundation. Within this dimension, our children develop their reading, mathematics, science and research skills in depth. Built on solid ground, these competencies nourish children’s critical thinking, collaboration and effective communication. Together, they form the most essential toolkit our children will need to find their way with confidence and to stand firm with resilience in an ever-changing, increasingly complex future.

Thematic Learning Dimension

Interdisciplinary Wholeness

Thematic learning brings together mathematics, science, language skills, art, music and history, turning them into a single, meaningful learning adventure. At Serpil Orman Okulları, rather than shutting subjects away in closed, disconnected boxes, we design thematic units that mirror the flawless harmony found within nature and the world itself. In this way, our children gain the power to explore complex questions, real-life problems and global issues from a multifaceted, authentic and interdisciplinary perspective.

“Our Life Literacy model, with its strong academic foundation, empowers us to design an interdisciplinary learning experience that blends mathematics, science and language skills with real life. We do not confine learning to lessons alone; we focus on the value it will bring directly to the world. In this way, we guide our children not only to be innovative, but also to create restorative solutions that heal the world.”

“We believe in the power of learning through play, especially in the heart of nature. Our programme nurtures the unique sense of wonder within every child and, by using the forest as ‘a living classroom’, sparks their courage to ask questions. Our aim is to build their self-confidence and inspire their minds as they take their first steps on a lifelong learning journey.”
