Engineering activities

See the problem, build the solution

In engineering activities, students take on a real problem; they suggest a solution, build a prototype, test it and improve it.

This work starts from problems in nature and everyday life. A failed attempt is treated as new knowledge gained along the way.

The engineering design cycle

  • ProblemWhat do we want to solve?
  • IdeaThinking of more than one way to a solution.
  • PrototypeBuilding a quick, simple model.
  • TestComparing the expected result with the real one.
  • ImprovementRedesigning with what has been learned.

A place to try and make

Outdoor work areas provide a setting for experimenting and making with real materials.

SampleAreas of Work

Activities are shaped by grade level and interests. The general framework:

  • Structure and balanceTesting the strength of structures such as towers, bridges and roofs.
  • Motion and mechanismsSimple machines, levers and the logic of gears.
  • Nature-friendly solutionsLooking for a simple, workable solution to an environmental problem.

Concrete activities and products made during the year will be shared by the school.

Students working together

Making together

Engineering activities are teamwork. Students share tasks, build on each other’s ideas and take ownership of the shared product.
